Badge Description

A "particularly isolated aimaag" the site information form says. What does that mean? I mean, this is Mongolia right? How much more can any one place be isolated in the second largest landlocked country on
Earth. Right? RIGHT!?

Welcome to Zavkhan. You're 5,751 above sea level and at least 17 hours away from the next set of volunteers. So while your friends in other aimaag centers are enjoying warm apartments, hot showers, tofu, chicken, and that Korean restaurant that everyone loves (we're looking at you Khovd), you'll be sitting alone in your ger (yes even in the aimag capital of Uliastai), waiting for the electricity to turn back on, which may or may not happen for the next 2 days, and wishing you could see the wall so that you could stare at it.

While the coldest soum in the country, Tosonsengel, is about 5 hours away from Uliastai you'll be sitting pretty in the second or third coldest part of the country, basking in balmy temperatures that are on average 10 to 15 degrees colder than most of the rest of the country. That's right, when it's -20 in UB it's -30 here, and when it's -30 in UB, it's -40 here, and when it's -40 in UB you've already frozen to death long, long ago. But, you also get the beautiful Mountains, lots of rivers, trees, and awesome people, (most of which you'll barely see because it'll be way, way too cold to go outside). This should keep you happy because the bus ride is at least 30 hours and there's a good chance you'll freeze to death on the way.

Make sure to go check out Black Lake, Dyan Camp, Dyan Uul, and the wonderful, beautiful, majestic and breath-taking Otgon Tinger Mountain, which is one the highest and holiest places in the country.

P.S. Watch out for wolves in Uliastai during the winter.
